Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin to a fairly remarkable family. His grandfather, Luigi, was Italy’s first post-war president, while his father, Giulio, was a publisher who worked with such prestigious authors as Italo Calvino and Primo Levi. His mother, an accomplished amateur pianist, encouraged his interest in music.
The seemingly simple but strangely affecting music of Einaudi defies pigeonholing. Is it minimalism? Is it pop? Is it world music? Is it classical? He prefers to leave the question open. “I don’t want to label it with just one word,” he says. “There is something in it that comes from classical, but I have influences from different music I’ve experienced in my life, from African music to folk and rock.”
Whatever you’d call it, listeners can expect to feel transported and mesmerised by pieces like Einaudi’s 'Two Trees'. Einaudi describes his music as “a musical kaleidoscope where you [can] always find something that has a connection with your life and memories.”
